There are infinite business
ideas that are available to a prospective home based business
owner. Depending on the skills and preferences of an individual
some ideas may include opening a store, a photographic studio,
small-scale manufacturing, a restaurant, a pub, or even a
barbershop. Before setting out, a home based business owner has to
consider how the home based business venture will operate i.e. the
business structure. A home based business owner can choose to
either be self-employed, a small and medium enterprise (SME), a
SOHO (small office, home office) or an information or service
providers business.
It is imperative for a home
based business owner to carefully select, create and choose the
right business model. The process requires diligence, an open mind
and lots of patience. The home based business owner needs to be
aware of the pitfalls that they may encounter down the path.
The first customers for a home
based business owner are normally family members, friends and
neighbors. A home based business owner should pay close attention
to the formative pieces of advice and criticisms offered by these
persons. A home based business owner has to learn to put on a
tough skin to fend off negative comments and threats. They will
also need to learn the skills of being constantly open to new
ideas and being flexible. The key for a home based business owner
is to scout around for the best ideas that can be turned into a
viable business. Most owners have made it big by capitalizing on
their skills, passions and specialties. Having selected the right
idea, the home based business owner must then make a plan for
business growth, areas of preference and a vision for the
business.
By virtue of their limited size
of operations, a home based business owner can face a myriad of
problems. The main problem is the capital required to start up the
new home based business. Ideally, a home based business owner
should have a fund reserve equal to the projected first year
revenues plus anticipated expenses. The home based business owner
must work diligently in the first stages of the venture to ensure
that they at least break even i.e. getting to a level where the
total revenues earned will equal all the undertaken expenses. To
prevent the risk of pricing themselves too low or too high owners
must have the ability to do viable income projections.
A home based business owner
needs to market their business so as to reach a wide market
audience. There are many ways available for a home based business
owner to advertise themselves. These include word-of-mouth, the
yellow pages, media including TV, radio and newspapers, networking
and the Internet. All depend on the amount of money the owners
have to spend on publicity and marketing. As usual, the cheapest
way will be word of mouth, so providing and excellent service and
good products is a very important factor when starting out as a
home based business owner. A home based business owner who might
want to have an easier start-off may think of franchising. Through
this method, entrepreneurs start businesses based on already
successful models. These are normally market leaders who are
already well known so it will be easy to get the clients and start
earning money. |
